Ways of others making

Manières de faire les autres

Résumé

Does constructivism apply to others, and if so, how ? Couîd the model of radical translation or interprétation be considered a potential extension of Goodman's constructivist project in as much as we «make» other minds when we render them intelligible by applying the principle of charity as Davidson does ? Despite their shared criticism of the myth of the given, Goodman's constructivism does not amount to the idealism of other minds which is entailed by Davidson's charity and it's élimination of the very idea of a conceptual scheme. Indeed, far from being incohérent and the source of scepticism and intelligible otherness, this very idea (instead of its rejection by truth théories) makes possible to conceive substantive and meaningful anthropological différences. In my défense of the idea of a conceptual scheme against Davidson's attacks, I critique his attempt to réfute simultaneously anthropological reîativism and metaphysical scepticism. Considering the reorientation of metaphysical questions about scepticism and realism towards the realm of anthropology and social reality in the views of Davidson and Searle, the objections adressed to Goodman on the ground that he is an idealist couîd turned against his critics as concerned their treatment of social reality. Foilowing Goodman's lead, I would argue for a libération of the understanding of others and anthropological issues from the bonds of scepticism and thus, for a redéfinition of the problem of other minds.
