What is left of the American Dream ? Taking stock of America's "Broken" Society

Résumé

The American Dream has become an inherent part of American identity, a sort of national motto. Due to the popularity of this article of faith, its meaning and what it encompasses is often taken for granted. This research focuses on defining the American Dream, but most importantly to explain why it no longer seems relevant for many in today’s America’s "broken" society. The American Dream encompasses many ideals. Four major ones will be focused on in this document: upward social mobility, equality (of rights and opportunity), freedom (from fear), and democracy. The challenges those ideals face today will be examined. A vast variety of topics will be looked at such as the power shift from Labor to Capital, the healthcare system, the higher education system, structural racism, white supremacism, gun and police violence, economic insecurity, immigration, the vicious cycle of the concentration of wealth and power and many more.
