The figure of Boileau: representations, institutions, methods (17th- 21st centuries)

A school nursery rhyme, which has sung in the memory of generations of schoolchildren, brings together the illustrations of the Grand Siècle: "A crow perched on the root of the heather drinks water from the Molière fountain". Boileau's name has the cohesive function of the verbal group. He gathers the classical generation around him, but he loses his integrity. It is this paradoxical fortune that is the subject of this book. Boileau embodies French classicism. He was the one who "gnashed his teeth" on the evening of the Battle of Hernani. His name has not ceased to recur, for four centuries, in literary debates, with such constancy that Thibaudet proposed to see in him the "president" of the Republic of Letters. But in return for this cardinal position, the work is little read, little known. This is the paradox of Boileau: the presence of the name is accompanied by a relative oblivion of the work. From Houdar de la Motte to Lacan, from Sainte-Beuve to Proust, from Victor Hugo to Baudelaire, Queneau, Francis Ponge or Philippe Beck, what does the name Boileau cover? The study of a figure amounts to questioning the formation of the average abstractions that inhabit cultural memory and that are narrated by historiographical scenarios. This is the epistemological ambition of an investigation that is also a reflection on the metamorphoses of the idea of literature.
